Ways to Indicate Signs of Fleas on Dogs and Prevention

by Iren Georgievain Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-21)

Fleas and ticks are very somewhat difficult to deal with. They may go and come once again. The worse thing that may happen is when your dog suffers from disease due to the bites of fleas, soreness, growth of moles and red, painful bumps. Learn the different causes of fleas on dogs so you know if your own dog is suffering from this insect's bites. You also have to be aware of the solutions and treatment against fleas.

Signs of the Presence of Fleas

1. Scratching of the Body

If your dog sleeps outside your house, he or she most likely gets flea infestation. The environment is one major factor of the influx of fleas. Once your dog has fleas, he or she starts scratching the entire body. Fleas live and hide under the hair or coat of dogs. They feed on the blood so whenever they suck blood, a dog feels itchiness and pain. That causes your dog to scratch most of the time. This is one sign of infestation of fleas on dogs.

2. Red Bumps or Moles

Ticks and fleas on dogs can cause different kinds of diseases and illnesses. They can get skin irritation or allergy due to the disease brought by the bites of fleas. The bite of a single flea or tick can actually cause red bumps that are very sore and itchy. Dogs usually scratch them off making the condition a lot worse. If not bumps, it can be moles which may become cancerous. If there are moles due to flea bites, you have to bring your dog to the vet as soon as possible.

3. Hair Loss

Because of constant scratching, a dog may lose some of his or her hair. It is not just solely about scratching the body that tends to lose hair on dogs. It is also about the impact of the bites of fleas because they create soreness and diseases inside the body or the blood is affected.

Treatments of Fleas

Getting rid of fleas on dogs is a big challenge and responsibility for owners but a very essential thing to consider. To keep your dog free from fleas, you have to maintain his or her health and hygiene. You need to take care of your dog every day so there is no chance that a group of fleas flock onto his or her body. Bathing your dog regularly, feeding him or her the right foods and giving some time to exercise can help prevent the infestation of ticks and fleas.

It also helps if your take your dog to a veterinarian on a regular basis to have him or her checked. A vet can give you good suggestions and pieces of advice regarding how to deal with fleas on dogs. You can ask some good products to apply in order to eliminate fleas as well as ticks. If there are bumps and moles, you will know the proper way to remove them. Hence, do not ignore the help a vet can offer to you and your dog.

How to Train a Chihuahua

by Greg Sanchezin Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-21)

If you have brought home a Chihuahua, then the very first thing on your mind is to train it right. There are specialist trainers for Chihuahuas who would be able to run it through the obedience training commands. At the same time, you as the owner of the Chihuahua could also teach it the rudiments and have a well behaved dog on hand,
The thing to remember is that you must familiarize your Chihuahua to the commands that you are going to use. Once your puppy is familiar with these commands and knows what is expected from it, then it will be able to respond right. The right way to go about with this is to reinforce the training in the most positive way to your puppy. Even if it does not get it right the very first time you shouldn't lose your cool and scold it. Raising your hand or voice on your puppy is not going to work and rather make it all the more stubborn and not listen to you. Positive reinforcement is what will get your puppy to behave well and do as you wish it to.
The right age to start off your puppy is to start the training right after it is eight weeks old. This will enable you to be able to catch it at the right age. Also, the puppy won't be too young to be able to understand your commands. But, the only thing that you need to be aware of is that a puppy has a far lesser attention span than an adult dog. Therefore, the training sessions that you conduct for your puppy should be spread out throughout the day and at the same time every single day. Rather than putting your puppy through one long training session you can do well to chunk it up. This will allow your puppy to be more receptive to the training and be obedient as well.
If you still want to know , then one thing you need to make sure of is that you let your puppy know right from day one that you mean business. These little pets can be so very adoring, cute and loveable that one look from them can make your heart melt. But, hold on since you want the very best for them and yourself. Do not allow your pet to start ruling you since that could happen without you realizing it.
The thing that works really well for is that you need to be consistent in your commands and actions. Ensure that the day is divided into various time frames and at each one you do something specific. This will fix feeding times, time for exercise, time that you take your puppy out for a walk and so on. This will make your puppy realize that there are certain times that it is expected to do certain things.

Advantages of Getting Dog Car Seats

by Michelle Chingin Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-21)

Riding the car with your four legged furry friend is not the easiest thing to do. Dogs are very playful in nature so you can't really stop them from doing their thing. As for my dog, he loves to jump around the car and even dig the seat as if there is a hidden treasure beneath it while we are on the road. I love traveling with my dog but sometimes, it could really be both frustrating and annoying at the same time. Fortunately, I've found a solution to this. I got a dog car seat and my trips with my pet have changed ever since. There are a lot of advantages of getting seats specially designed for your dog. Let me share to you some of them.

One of the benefits of having a dog car seat is that it makes your furry companion comfortable while you're on the road. It also prevents your dog from crossing to the driver's seat and kissing the driver. Having a seat specially designed for your dog prevents you from getting distracted and losing your focus from driving. It's very important to keep your dog secure so that they won't be able to distract you in any way which can put both your lives in danger. Some seats even have built in food bowls which is quite neat. It's really a good way to keep tantrums at bay because your pet can eat anytime they want. Dogs tend to be demanding when it comes to their basic needs so it's nice to have all their needs at their reach.

Another benefit of having a dog car seat is having a clean car. Dog seats prevent your pet's fur and dirt from getting to your car seat. Human car seats tend to smell like your pet if you don't have a seat designed for your dog, so it's nice to have a barrier between your pet and your car seat. And another thing, having one also prevents your dog from digging and scratching your car seat cover. Seat covers are not cheap these days so it's better to invest in a much cheaper seat for dogs rather than change your expensive seat cover repeatedly.

Some people who are not into dogs might think having a seat for their dogs is a pathetic idea. Some might think it is just a waste of money. But for people who love their dogs and consider them as family members, they are willing to do everything necessary to secure the safety of their pets. About the Author

Ingredients in Dog Food: Additives to Avoid - Part 2

by Kent Simmonsin Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-21)

Introduction

In my previous article on this subject I looked at some controversial ingredients in dog that should be avoided. Specifically, I spoke about BHA and BHT, two additives which are used to preserve kibble.

In this article, I want to focus on three additional ingredients that should have no part in your dog's consumption: these are ethoxquin, propyl gallate and propylene glycol.

Some Important Reminders

First, it is important to make two disclaimers:

1) Your best bet for your pet's health is the homemade dog food recipe route. The testimonies of thousands of dog owners who have switched bear out this fact. I urge you to look into this alternative method of feeding your pet.

2) Not every ingredient in a dog food label that is unpronounceable is dangerous. We should be wise consumers, not easily frightened ones. With a bit of homework we can become quite astute in deciding what is best for our pets.

Additives to Avoid

All right then, there are five additives that you should avoid in dog food: BHA, BTA, ethoxquin, propylene glycol and propyl gallate.

We will examine ethoxquin, propylene glycol and propyl gallate in this article:

1) Ethoxquin

Ethoxquin is a chemical preservative that keeps the fat additives in pet food from going rancid. Come again? Does it not seem strange to you that fat flavoring must be added to your pet's food in order to make it appealing? Such are the extreme processing conditions of most manufactured dog food.

The FDA has rated ethoxquin a safe food additive, however, there is much speculation and controversy that surrounds this chemical. The Department of Pathology at Nagoya City University Medical school in Japan has found ethoxyquin to promote kidney and bladder cancer as well as stomach tumors.

2) Propyl gallate

Propyl gallate is used as a dog food preservative. It is a controversial ingredient, which has also been linked to cancer.

3) Propylene glycol

Propylene glycol is a chemical compound with many commercial applications. Among other things, it is used as a solvent in many pharmaceuticals, as a moisturizer in cosmetics, as a non-toxic antifreeze and of course, as an additive to dog food to preserve soft-moist foods and treats. To be fair, it is also used as an additive in some human foods as well.

Though propylene glycol appears on the FDA's "Generally Recognized as Safe" (GRAS) list of dog food additives, it has been banned for use in cat food because of its adverse affect on feline red blood cells.

The bottom line is that it remains a controversial ingredient with many pet experts and the toxicity to cats (particularly in its connection to cat food) provides reason enough to avoid this ingredient in their pet's food.

Conclusion

As you can see, even this cursory review of these preservatives should give any dog lover pause when feeding their pet a steady diet of processed commercial pet food.

If you are unable to follow through with a diet of fresh, homemade dog food recipes then it is critically important that you read your dog food labels and stay clear of the above-mentioned chemicals. About the Author

More Overlooked Reasons to Choose a Homemade Dog Food Recipe vs. Processed Food

by Kent Simmonsin Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-21)

Introduction

There are tons of reasons for choosing a homemade dog food recipe diet for your pet vs. feeding processed food.

The most obvious reasons have to do with the questionable ingredients in many dog foods; the methods which are used to make dog food and the fact that processed pet food is really NOT the best nutritional option for your dog (no matter how many star ratings it receives.)

In this article, however, I wanted to focus on some overlooked reasons for why a homemade dog food recipe diet is better any kibble or canned food.

#1 - Conviction (or Confidence or Certainty)

When you truly get a handle on making homemade recipes, and when you see the transformation in your pet, you are going to have such a supreme confidence when it comes to your dog's nutrition.

You will no longer be subject to bogus claims of "balanced and complete meals" nor will you be intimidated by veterinarian claims that only trained "experts" can feed your dog (if you visit your vet at all, that is!)

Your dog's nutrition is the key to a long lasting and healthy life, and when you come up to speed on feeding homemade recipes, you will have the profound conviction that you know EXACTLY what you are doing when it comes to his / her diet.

# 2 - A Certain Unease

Let's be honest, for many dog owners feeding time is a matter of convenience (something many dog owners fear they will lose if feeding homemade recipes. While this is not entirely true, we'll leave it for another article).

Yet, if owners really looked deep inside they would have to admit that feeding a complete and balanced meal from a processed food bag just makes no sense. You wouldn't open a can and feed a child a complete and balanced meal, every day for every single meal.

Nature intended animals to have variety, to have natural ingredients, whether they were grabbing bananas directly from a tree or settling down to finish off their prey.

There is a certain unease that some pet owners have when they reach for the bag or can. That feeling is their conscience letting them know that another method of feeding awaits, one which is infinitely better for their pets.

# 3 - Camaraderie

This may sound strange since you probably already have a great friendship with your dog. It's just that when you really begin to take control of his / her nutrition, it really does begin to transform that relationship.

You will feel pride, joy, and love well up inside you because now you KNOW, you KNOW (again it's that conviction) that you are prolonging your dog's precious life and reducing his/her ailments by feeding natural. (You may at times feel sadness for having left his nutrition to some large conglomerate).

But no worries, now you have chosen a better way, and it is one more way that you are showing your dog how much you care.

Conclusion

Conviction, a Certain Unease and newfound Camaraderie... again, less common (but no less important) reasons to begin feeding your pet a diet of homemade dog food recipes.

Happy feeding! About the Author

Taming the Untamable Puppy

by David Beartin Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-18)

So there you are . . . at the pet store or local rescue shelter. Your daughter's pigtails sway as she rushes to pick out "the one" that makes her heart bounce high. You clench as she passes the golden puppy on the right that has drug his food bowl all across his pen, ripped the head off his squeaking Santa toy and managed to destroy his padded bed in one swift chewing session. Just keep walking. Just keep walking. You reason inside your head. But no luck . . . she has fallen head over ballet flats for this little rascal - and you just don't have the heart to tell her "no way".
Maybe things will get better once you get home right?
But then it happens, you set the puppy in the living room and it's like you set free the Tasmanian Devil! You can see it's going to be an uphill climb . . . but she loves the darn thing too much to give it back. Besides it's not really your style to give up so easy. You might be stuck with problem pup now but you don't have to be stuck with that problem behavior. With a little patience and these tips you can change that problem pup into a prized pal.

Stay Clam
One of the most amazing things about animals, especially our pets, is that they can sense your emotional state. Perhaps this derives from their ability to get "in sync" with the leader of the pack in the wild. Since YOU are now the leader of the pack your pup will be looking to you for emotional cues. This is why it is imperative that you remain calm and in control. Freaking out will only send mixed signals. When you react to a no-no simply remain calm but use a calm authoritative voice when training the puppy to nix a behavior.

Enlist the Help of Your Kids
Because your puppy probably does more playing with your children than with you the best advice that you might not implement is helping your kids know how to reward the puppy for good behavior. Discipline is a bit harder for kids and it might be hard for them to send the pup to his kennel for shoe chewing but rewarding them is always fun and easy.
Encourage your child to praise the pup for good behavior. Shower him with love and affection . . . the more over the top the better. This helps the puppy to really soak in what's going on and associate good behavior with approval and praise.

Don't Give Up
At first, conquering the problematic behavior of a new pet can seem like it will never end. Maybe you have taken your "tinkling on the expensive couch" pet outdoors a zillion times and you are simply getting frustrated because he can focus enough to pee on the exact same edge of the Lazy Boy but when he gets outside he starts chasing a squirrel . . . in a circle. These types of instances are what make you want to give up. It's not exactly the monotony that gets you instead it is the little things that make the job just so much more difficult!
While it is certainly a daunting task it is not an endless one. If you are dedicated to seeing a change and put in equal parts love and training you won't have a problem pet forever. Just like children, some pets just need a little extra love and attention to grow and thrive.

Consider the Possibilities
When the going gets tough remind yourself that this relationship can be a win win. Did you know that people with pets have been statically live longer? (Yes. Even those with pets like YOURS.) Pets are now even prescribed to patients with seizures, anxiety disorders, emotional issues and other needs that go outside the realm of what a typical service dog provides. Your pet can do the same for you . . . you just have to keep on keeping on.

Right now the way sure looks rough right? But if you're reading this you are taking the first steps to making it work and implanting a good plan of action. So just keep trying. When you do, you're sure to find that they begin to leave less and less paw prints on your prized begonias and more and more paw prints on your heart. About the Author

Keeping Your Dog Healthy for Many Dog Years

by Allison Edringtonin Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-16)

Part of the deal when you own a dog is you are completely responsible for your pet's well being. Even if you own a cat or a rat, you must take care of your pets, as they certainly cannot do the required tasks themselves. If your pooch gets sick, you have to pay the veterinary bill no matter the cost. "In sickness and in health" is not only for married couples!

Since you are totally responsible for your pet's health, you can also take steps to keep your dog healthy throughout the years. While this will not completely eliminate the need for your dog to go to the vet's office, you can reduce the number of times your pup will need extra medical care. However, genetic problems, cancer and other factors cannot easily be prevented.

Three Ways to Keep Your Dog Healthy

Make sure your dog is up to date on all required vaccinations. While this may be a basic health concept to you, a shocking number of pet owners do not keep their dogs or cats current on vaccinations. This is all the more reason your dog should be vaccinated - if other pets are infected that your dog comes into contact with or have their vaccinations but act as carriers, your pet could become sick. Many of the diseases the dog vaccines protect against are potentially fatal, so to avoid costly treatment for your dog, getting Fido his shots is best practice. If you are price sensitive, call your local animal shelter to see if they know any clinics that offer discount vaccination days.
Take your dog to the vet's office if your dog begins to act strangely or if you suspect something is wrong. While this may seem counter-intuitive to saving money, in the long run it truly is not. Much like with people, the longer you wait to go to see the doctor for a problem, the worse it often becomes. Dog doctors are not often as pricey as ones for humans, so if nothing is wrong, it will not set you back too much.
Research the common problems for your dog's specific breed. You likely bought or picked out your dog partially based on his breed (or mix of breeds) and so you can easily research either online or by calling a veterinary office the medical problems most likely to affect your pooch. For example, beagles often run into hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism and reverse sneezing. Once you know what to look for, you can take steps to prevent the issue from being a problem or, if need be, take your dog to the vet at the first sign of a common medical issue. About the Author

3 Cool Toys and Gifts for Your Pet

by PassivePursuitsin Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-16)

So you're considering buying your pet a cool present for the holidays. That is absolutely understandable. And why wouldn't you? Even before Lassie - and most certainly after - pets have always had a singular recognition as boon companions by society in general and by their owners in particular. That is based in large part on the fact that pets are loyal and courageous, and tend to cherish you completely, regardless of anything else (if only others in our lives could do the same - especially relatives).

Small wonder then, that people sometimes have a tendency to give their pets an inordinate amount of attention: they spare no expense when it comes to the care and comfort of their dog or cat; they take their pets with them wherever they go (and won't patronize a place with a "No Pets Allowed" policy); they buy their pets clothing and costumes - especially for holidays like Halloween and Christmas.

Furthermore, they also have a penchant for putting their pets on their Christmas list, attempting to obtain the very best present or toy. It's as challenging as purchasing gifts for any other member of your household, and let's face it: that is what pets are - part of the family. Keeping that in mind, here are 3 cool gifts that your pet would love to get this holiday season:

Frolicat Interactive Laser Pet Toy
This neat little gift will thrill your pet - primarily cats - for hours on end. It automatically moves the laser in arbitrary patterns for your pet to frolic after and chase play with. Or, if put on the manual setting, it's possible to position the laser dot anywhere you like and observe your pet playfully go after it. All in all, it really is a fantastic toy that your pet will always find enjoyable.

Scoopfree Self-Cleaning Litter Box
Okay, in all honesty, that is probably a gift that cat owners will probably appreciate more than the cat (much like the guy who buys his wife a circular saw for her birthday). There's no scooping, no cleaning, no muss or fuss. Furthermore, in addition to owners not having to worry about pet smells, wastes, etc., it's also good for several weeks. (It's a gift that keeps on giving.)

Lectro Soft Outdoor Bed
Your pet will absolutelyadore you for this gift: their very own heated pad. Surprisingly apt for use either outside or inside, it can keep your pet nice and toasty - even when the weather becomes more extreme - which is probably very helpful for older animals.

In short, for all those thinking about finding some cool toy for their pet this year, any one of the gifts noted above would actually be a great way to thank your cat or canine for the affection, loyalty and companionship they've given you. They won't say it in words, but I guarantee that your pet will thank you.

3 Ways to Improve Dog Sanity During Celebrations and Holidays

by Allison Edringtonin Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-16)

Preparing for a party or holiday can be a trying task for you - you need to get the food, the decorations and all the rest of the details in order before your guests arrive or your family is ready to celebrate. One member of the family though is often forgotten in most people's considerations during such preparations - the family dog!

A fact often taken for granted is that your dog's six senses are much more keen than your own, so the fireworks going off or a mass of people coming into your home that are unfamiliar can make your dog either terribly uneasy or ridiculously excited. With his normal routine broken, your dog will likely not be on his best behavior. Your dog cannot appreciate the meaning behind the holidays, so the stress really is not worth it to him.

But do not cancel your party plans quite yet. If you take a few steps ahead of time to prepare your pup for the change up, your dog will have a much less stressful time. You will enjoy the festivities more knowing your dog is much happier than he otherwise would have been.

Here are three tips to help your pup get through any party or holiday:

For events where many people will be coming to your house, put your dog someplace out of the way. Your backyard is an excellent option, as you can easily put him outside with plenty of food and water without having to worry about him making a mess. This is especially helpful if other guests bring their pets over, so they can entertain each other outside. If you live in a place where that is not an option, locking him in your bedroom or in his carrier with food and toys will help him get through the night - just make sure to give him bathroom breaks!
When you are not playing host, you are taking your pup to other parties that your friends and family throw. Whenever you take your dog traveling with you, it provides a lot of stimulants for your dog to handle. To bring a little bit of home with you, consider picking up a designer dog carrier - these are comfortable for you pet to lay in and stylish for you to carry. Keep an ample supply of treats on hand and a collar and leash in case your dog needs to use the bathroom. If your dog gets too antsy, you can close him inside the carrier to calm down - just do not leave the carrier unattended.
If your dog just gets too stressed out, you have two options. The first is asking your veterinarian for a sedative that will knock your pup out. Place your dog in a comfy place to sleep it off if you choose this option. The other is to take your dog to an overnight kennel or doggie day care facility where he can play with other dogs and not worry about all your guests.

Crate Training You Puppy Step By Step

by Wayne Greenin Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-16)

If you close the door of crate or playpen and find your dog is crying, you need to avoid letting him/her out. Once you let him/her out when he is crying, the dog will understand that he can give up anything he doesn't want to do by crying. The exception to this rule is if you have forgotten to take him out to do his business first before locking him in. Always wait until your puppy is quiet before you let him out of his crate.

You have an alternative option for the dog's crying when he is in the crate or dog playpen. You can cover the crate with an old clothes or anything like this. It can prevent the dog seeing you, which can make your dog calm down quickly. The only other exception to this is when you first get up in the morning or you have been gone longer than two hours and your puppy has probably something to relieve and needs to go out promptly. Take him out right away.

Meanwhile, no matter how many hours you go out in the day, the first thing when you get home is to let the dog out promptly. When your dog is growing mature and has voluntary control over urinary and fecal discharge, he can hold it for long time. Please take a particular note that the time your doggy can hold it also depends on food and medication. Digestive upsets can cause your dog to go to the toilet much more often. Certain types of medications can raise water consumption, which, in future can cause a dog to eliminate much more often than normal. Always ask your veterinarian about the effects medications may have on your dog.

You need to place the crate or the dog playpen in your house to keep your dog away from bad weather, horrible sound and something like that. Try to provide a nice environment for him/her to stay. Avoid placing food and water in the crate with your dog. Your dog's crate should only contain an old towel, and a special chew item such as a stuffed Kong toy or a stuffed sterilized beef bone.

When your dog stays in the crate you can play some crate game with him. But when he goes out, you need to leave him alone and ignore him. You should make him understand that staying in the crate is better than going out of it. As we said above, most dogs will calm down quickly after you cover the crate with a clothes or something to prevent them seeing you. Besides that, offer something really good to chew to your dog when he is in the crate. Take it from him when he comes out of the crate. You need to confirm that your dog has had enough exercise before going to stay in the crate longer than twenty minutes. A tired dog doesn't have energy to cry. You need to confirm that your dog has recently eliminated before staying in the crate for any length of time. Please remember not to let the dog out when he is crying. Try to wait until there is a moment of silence and then slip a treat to the back of the crate and then open the door. Make him understand that crying can't change anything. About the Author

Dog shoes boots for your favorite hound-dog

by Qianin Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-11)

It may seem that may be a rather strange accoutrement for a dog but they have their uses. are useful where the weather is inclined to be inclement and there is a real possibility of injury. can also join the ranks of the Elizabeth collar used for the protection of already injured animals.

The purchase of may not provide the ultimate luxury for your pooch but it sure is close. are available in a wide rang of styles and materials from leather to man made composite materials to provide maximum comfort and protection from the elements. Making your German Shepherd Dog wear will probably be something of a challenge and some of the other large dogs may not see the advantages of dog shoes boots the same way that the owner does. One must hope that do not provide an unwanted hazard for the dog owner.

Whatever the final use of the is the dog boots are available in a wide variety of shapes and materials. The material used will be dependent upon the ultimate use of the. In the main the use of dog shoes boots is decorative so soft leather or durable composite is used for the manufacture of such.

If the use of the is for protection then the material used for the manufacture of the will be dependent upon the kind of protection actually being afforded by the. Medical protection will mean that the dog shoes have to be incapable of rendering further injury. If the protection being afforded is against the elements then the have to be extremely rugged and will probably contain some kind of reinforcement.

The issue of how to get a rather large animal to wear also rears its head. Some of these pooches will not look upon as kindly as the doting owner does so there are risks involved here. Most owners know their dogs well and will not try to get what can be an aggressive animal to wear if there are real risks involved.

The manufactures and sellers of do not wish to be part of any insurance disclaimers. That would be disastrous for that entire industry.

And there is just one last thing to be discussed when things come down to choosing a nice pair of dog shoes boots. In fact, it is a matter that could be discussed for almost any item available on the market. And that matter concerns the question where to get it from - the online market or the offline market! Unsurprisingly, both have advantages and disadvantages but when dog shoes are concerned, there is no doubt that choosing to buy online is a better thing to do. There are thousands of models and designs that can be seen within minutes. Real market (the shops) cannot offer that, can it?

Going To Dog Agility Classes Could Be A Profit To Both

by Chantal Karytain Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-11)

The dog is a natural companion to mankind, and several families in England have one of these animals as a pet. Dogs that are well trained are trustworthy and loyal, and many of them are the kind of animals which we happily permit to play with small children or other small animals. However, no matter how well behaved the dog, as a species they tend to require lots of attention and lots of effort, since they have lots of energy that is not dissipated through living in a home with people.

Dogs, mainly breeds like Springer spaniels, collie dogs, or similar mongrels of this sort, typically find it difficult to get their energy requirements met, and this will lead them into awful behaviour. Regardless of how much you spend on puppy training classes, the dog will simply have too much energy to be good.

One answer to this is to put them for agility training. In such dog training Surrey sessions, the dog is taught to leap things, clamber over other things, or go through cloth tunnels on the floor. There is actually a section at the yearly Crafts show devoted to exactly this type of learning, and the agility dog training Surrey team have been known to do well in the past at this competition.

Though your dog may not get good enough to compete at a top level, they may benefit from agility classes, both at the extent of puppy training Surrey activity, and at a stage for more adult dogs. The benefits can be both physical - since the puppy has to run around throughout the agility class, they are usually too tired for much activity after this, but they will also face psychological issues in the form of concentration, that can improve the puppy's training in general.

There are advantages to the humans in employing agility dog training Surrey classes to offer your dog more exercise. There is certainly plenty of fitness needed by the dog owner, and they often find themselves losing weight and finding it easier to do tasks in the house since they are fitter. There is also a lot of concentration demanded from the owner, so they will also improve mentally. When you are teaching your puppy to jump hurdles and climb up over boxes, you may also gain a lot of authority over the dog, since you have to give commands clearly and the animal has to pay attention. Creating this sort of bond could intensify your relationship too, as you must trust each other in order to be a successful team. About the Author

Three Effective Natural Remedies For Treating Dog Diarrhea

by Bimolin Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-11)

Probably, almost all dogs have the hobby of scavenging everything they see on their way. Undoubtedly, eating something bad can result in unpleasant consequences and this is the major reason for dog diarrhea. If you have noticed that your pet suffers from diarrhea you must start treating as quickly as possible. But the good news is that treatment of your dog diarrhea isn't expensive as you can use natural remedies which are usually available at every home.

1. Probiotics

If a dog has a balanced number of good and bad bacteria in its digestive system, it will have no problems with the stomach. But when this balance is somewhat violated some digestive problems can appear in dogs. One of such negative consequences is dog diarrhea. It's correct to think that returning the necessary balance between bad bacteria and good bacteria will treat diarrhea. But what can create this proper balance you will ask. These substances are known as probiotics which are represented by useful bacteria. The number of such useful bacteria should exceed the number of bad bacteria in the stomach of a healthy dog. So, probiotics is one of the dog diarrhea natural remedies that can also help in solving a number of other gastroenterological problems.

2. Bland Foods

Another dog diarrhea natural remedy is feeding bland foods to your dog. This will assist your dog to recover and receive the necessary nutrients for returning health. Bland foods are so important for your dog because at first your pet won't be able to eat what it usually used to eat before having diarrhea. Just like people need to eat bland foods dogs also should eat them as they are light to the dog's stomach and helps t accelerate the recovery. In addition, bland foods also help dogs to get back to their usual diet.

3. Give Much Water To Your Dog

Finally, it's necessary to emphasize that probably the best natural remedy for dog diarrhea is rehydration that is drinking as much water as possible. Everybody knows that diarrhea results in fluid loss in both humans and animals, so it's necessary to keep replenishing the body with water. Drinking more water than usual will prevent your pet from the feeling of weakness and sickness because of fluid loss. It's recommended to give water to the dog every time when it has liquid feces. Usually, the best remedy for treatment of dog diarrhea is a water diet and no food during twelve or twenty-four hours.

Those were three major dog diarrhea natural remedies contributing to your dog's natural recovery. They are offering enough water, nutrients and probiotics as well as keeping the right balance between good and bad stomach bacteria. It's recommended to be always ready and have these natural remedies at hand in case if your pet suffers from diarrhea. If this is an ordinary diarrhea and your dog is provided with all these three natural remedies, undoubtedly, the diarrhea will soon leave your pet.

How To Stop A Digging Dog

by Ann Stewartin Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-11)

The holes in your yard are an indicator of one of the challenges many dog owners face, how to keep the dog from digging. Remember you're not alone in your stuggle!

What Causes Dogs to Dig?

To be effective in getting your dog to stop digging, you must first understand why she is digging. There are as many causes as there are options for dealing with the problem. Here are a few:

He is bored
Your Companion needs a sheter
He is trying to clean up, and is trying to bury the "extra" food
Your companion He is trying to get to other animals or is mimicking what he sees other dogs doing
She is curious about a new smell, the ground is full of them
He desires your attention, and has learned digging with get it (albeit negative)

How to Stop Your Dog's Digging

Although we may want to, hollering at your dog is not the best solution for your digging problem Instead, try to identify why your companion is digging, then try one of these solutions:

Try getting more socialization for your dog. Your dog may be trying to get to a neighbor's pet or imitating what she's seen from that neighbor's pet. Either way, adding more socilization to your companion's schedule can be an effective solution. If you have some time, take your pet to a dog park a few times a week; otherwise, try finding a quality doggie daycare.

Get the right toys. Sometimes dogs dig because they're bored and they are looking for entertainment and adventure. Interactive toys will help provide this entertainment. While this can help, you'll probably need to couple this with other strategies to be highly effective.

Inspect your yard for rodents, reptiles and burrowing animals. Be sure to call a live animal catcher or pest control specialist to take care of these animals, both for the sake of your lawn as well as the health of your pet.

Get a dog house. Dogs will dig if they feel the need for a shelter, which is especially common for female dogs. Try adding a dog house to your yard or providing her a special place that is just for her.

Try some chicken wire. If you've tried everything else, and there's a specific spot your dog keeps going back to dig in, try burying chicken wire 1-2 inches under the surface of the soil. When she digs, the sensation when she hits the wire will discourage her from digging there again.

Taking time to fully understand why your companion is digging will save you time, money, and your sanity...not to mention your dog's happiness.

Why Hypoallergenic Dog Food Is Good For Your Puppy

by Chris Robertsonin Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-16)

Hypoallergenic dog food may improve your dog's behavior and quality of life in unexpected ways.

Many pet owners have never considered how food allergies may be affecting their dog for one simple reason - food allergies in dogs often go undiagnosed. The symptoms of food sensitivities and allergies aren't always obviously linked to food. When a dog exhibits symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea and digestive upsets, it's fairly easy to assume food is the culprit.

Other common allergy symptoms are harder to trace back to their source, however. If your puppy is hyperactive, distractible or has itchy, flaky skin, you may not immediately consider his diet as the source of the problem. Complicating things even further, food allergies don't always show up immediately. Your dog may have no reaction to a particular dog food ingredient for years before developing symptoms.

If your puppy or adult dog has symptoms that may be related to food sensitivities, one of the best ways to determine their cause and treat the symptoms is to switch to a hypoallergenic dog food, such as H-Allergen.

What Is a Hypoallergenic Dog Food?

Many commercial foods contain ingredients such as chemicals and preservatives that may cause allergic symptoms in sensitive dogs. In addition, many dogs have food sensitivities to the same foods that are often problems for humans - wheat, gluten, milk, eggs and nuts. Hypoallergenic foods like H-Allergen contain only natural ingredients, and eliminate the proteins and other substances that are most likely to cause allergic symptoms in puppies and dogs.

Using Hypoallergenic Food to Pinpoint Food Allergies

Many vets recommend an elimination diet to pinpoint food allergies in dogs and puppies. An elimination diet requires that you eliminate all possible allergens from your dog's diet, then gradually add ingredients until you find the ones that trigger symptoms in your puppy. The initial period - generally about 12 weeks - helps clear all allergens from your dog's system and allows you a "clean slate" to start introducing suspected allergens. Once you know which allergens trigger symptoms in your dog, you can eliminate them completely and permanently from his diet.

A hypoallergenic puppy food like H-Allergen provides a good base for an elimination diet because it is made without any of the common allergenic ingredients found in most commercial dog foods.

Should You Make Your Own Hypoallergenic Pet Food?

If you check online, you'll find many recipes for homemade pet food, including recipes for hypoallergenic dog food. While it may be tempting, most vets advise against making pet food, especially special purpose pet food, at home. Providing balanced nutrition for your pet requires a great deal of nutritional knowledge and the ability to measure ingredients precisely. It's also very easy to accidentally introduce allergens into your dog food when you're cooking it in your home kitchen.

And while you may think that making your own dog food will be less expensive than buying hypoallergenic dog food, by the time you pay for all of the quality ingredients and count in your time and convenience, it's far less costly to buy one of the many varieties of hypoallergenic food available for your pet.

Where to Get Hypoallergenic Dog Food

Most major pet stores carry a selection of hypoallergenic dog food, including H-Allergen in a variety of flavors. If you can't get it at your favorite pet store, you can always find it online at pet stores that sell dog food and other things you need for your dog. About the Author

Homemade Dog Food Recipes: What Are You Waiting For?

by Kent Simmonsin Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-12)

Introduction

I wanted to share a little secret with you (it's not just homemade dog food recipes information!)

Here goes...dogs make me smile. Whenever I see one hanging out a car window, freedom loving tongue flapping to the side, their shiny coat blowing in the wind, I just stop and stare as they go by, and I smile.

There is just something special about dogs. I love everything about them: their regal look, their playful spirit, their boundless energy, their courage and of course, their undying loyalty! Who else can lift your spirits with just one wag of their tail?

Commercial Dog Food

This is why it pains me so much to see so many of these lovable creatures living on commercial fast food every day of their life. (Super size me!)

If you've never learned what goes into making commercial dog food, you owe it to yourself to find out. You are in for quite a shock. I urge you, Google "Dog Food Ingredients" and then "be afraid, be very afraid."

The pet food recalls of 2007 sent dog owners scrambling for another alternative to their pet's nutrition. I'm happy to say, thousands upon thousands turned to homemade recipes for their pets.

Benefits of Homemade Recipes

With homemade recipes, you control the ingredients, you control your dog's nutrition. Whether your dog is overweight, underweight, finicky, allergic, gets indigestion easily, it matters not. Once you become the master of their nutrition, you'll know exactly what to do to respond to your dog's every nutritional need.

In addition, dog food recipes are made from fresh, whole ingredients (unlike the processed plant and animal byproducts of the dog food brands!) Imagine, a whole chicken instead of the beaks, feathers, spines and intestines. (Again, go read that article on dog food ingredients. Do it now, or after you finish this one.)

Preparing natural food recipes for your dog, while initially a little work, is quite easy to do once you get the hang of it. There are tons of recipes to choose from or after a little while, you can develop your own.

After all, part of feeding a natural food diet is empowering yourself to know more about your dog's nutritional needs. Why do you trust the pet food companies? Believe me, it's not rocket science, and once you get control of what you feed your pet, you will not want to give it back.

Even better, there is a growing online community of owners feeding their pets natural food recipes. All of them are quite eager to share their experience with you and to tell you what an amazing difference it has made in their pet's health and life.

If you are still feeding commercial food, you will likely be amazed at your dog's response on a natural food diet. Vet visits will likely drop down to zero. Allergies and bad breath will disappear. Your dog will have more energy, better muscle tone, you name it. The list goes on.

Conclusion

You owe it to yourself and to that most loyal companion of yours to educate yourself about the many wonderful benefits of a homemade dog food diet.

Knowing that even one more dog can live healthier as he / she wags that tongue out the car window, well, even the thought of it brings a smile to my face. About the Author

Overlooked Reasons to Choose a Homemade Dog Food Recipe vs. Processed Food - Part 1

by Kent Simmonsin Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-12)

Introduction

There are many articles that tout the reasons one would choose a homemade dog food recipe over manufactured dog food such as kibble when feeding their pet.

Some of the more common reasons include: 1) Increased health, well-being and vitality for your dog; 2) Fewer allergies, illnesses and vet visits (in other words you save a ton of money!) and 3) The questionable quality of many processed dog food ingredients.

However, in this article, I wanted to highlight reasons that are often overlooked in choosing a steady diet of homemade recipes vs. processed food for your pet.

Overlooked Reasons To Go Natural

1. Control

When you make your own recipes, you control every, single ingredient that goes in. For dogs with allergies, remove ingredients from his favorite recipes until you find the culprit. Or better yet, start with just a few basic ingredients.

With processed food, you have to switch foods and it is likely that the heavy grain concentrations or additives in his kibble are causing the allergies in the first place.

Is your dog overweight, does he/she require less protein? Again, you can control every ingredient to match your dog's nutritional need perfectly.

2. Community

There is such an incredible community that exists on the Internet now for owners who prepare their own dog food recipes.

When you join the ranks, you will be embraced and you will meet some of the most passionate, caring dog lovers who have as their mission your dog's full and vital health. (This is not something that can be said for your average corporation in charge of profits for selling dog food.)

You needn't stagger around not knowing what to do, or where to buy the best supplies or how to prepare delicious and healthy recipes. There are plenty of people to help you along the way with advice, books and other recommendations.

You will be among so many friends who will love you and your dog.

3. Creativity

With homemade dog food recipes you are free to experiment with so many varieties of food for your pet.

I shudder to think about millions of dogs who live their whole lives eating sub-standard, processed food every single day. (They must truly love us because they hardly complain...)

Feeding our pets has turned into a boring, meaningless routine based mostly on convenience (not necessarily the best nutrition.)

But with only a small amount of effort and really not too much additional time, feeding time can turn into a great adventure for you and your pet. The smile on your dog's face at feeding time will make your heart burst because he / she knows that a wonderful surprise awaits.

Conclusion

There are several more less common (but important) reasons I can highlight for choosing a homemade dog food recipe over processed food; however those will have to wait for another article.

In the meantime, remember the three C's (control, community, and creativity) as you being to experiment the joys of feeding fresh homemade recipes to your dog.

The Fatal Weakness of All Dog Food Rating Systems

by Kent Simmonsin Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-12)

Introduction

There are various dog food rating systems on the Internet that claim to provide a listing of the best to worst dog food available on the market.

One popular method assigns points to "good" and "bad" ingredients in dog food to arrive at a final rating for pet food. Other methods allow consumers to rate food based on their pets' preferences or the experience one has had with a particular brand. Still other methods rate food for their meat content or whole vegetable or whole grain content. Some rating entities even contact the manufacturer to determine the sources of their ingredients.

The major weakness of most dog food rating systems

Each one of these methods could be critiqued on their own merits; however even without their proper downsides, most suffer from one overriding weakness: - A majority of the dog foods they rate are not genetically appropriate for your pet.

For starters we must contend with the fact that most conventional pet food is made under highly processed conditions. The resulting kibble, which has gone through an abnormal heating and cooling process, differs dramatically from natural food in its normal state.

You don't need a dog food expert to corroborate this fact for you. You know it instinctively from the foods you prepare daily for human consumption.

For example, if you've ever made lemonade by squeezing the lemons yourself you know it tastes qualitatively different (and is better for you) than some processed concoction you buy at the supermarket (a smiling actor notwithstanding).

Secondly, for all of the positive points or ratings that are given to foods with whole grains, they are still nevertheless starches. Starches are wonderful for plant eaters, but are not a natural food for carnivores. Yet many companies routinely use starches as fillers or as protein substitutes or because it helps the ingredients in the kibble to adhere.

The wonderful carnivore's anatomy (i.e. your dog's body)

Think about your dog's anatomy for a second.

First, it bears repeating often that your dog is a descendant of the wolf, a carnivore if there ever was one. I suspect that if a wolf in the wild came across some splattered kibble left by a camper with a dog, they would not know what to do with it.

Secondly, a dog's teeth are sharp and jagged, which means they are primed to tear through flesh, bones and fat. In addition, they have what is known as a hinged jaw, allowing them to swallow large chunks of food (i.e. the whole tiny, crunchy, pellet thing goes against their very nature.) Finally, there are no flat molars in a dog's mouth, making the grinding of vegetable matter quite difficult.

Thirdly, a dog's digestive system is short, and its powerful stomach acids, allow for the easy digestion of protein and fat. (This is why good homemade recipes call for lots of meat.) Grains, vegetables and other starches, however require further breakdowns which a short digestive tract is not able to handle as well. The result of all the starch in most pet foods is gas and smelly stools.

Conclusion

Dogs are incredible creatures, with amazing anatomies, whose real need is genetically appropriate food. The problem with most dog food rating systems is that they are giving high marks to a manufacturing process that ultimately fails to address this need.

Only a diet of fresh, natural, homemade dog food recipes begins to reverse this critical shortcoming. About the Author

Kent Simmons believes that the highest dog food rating comes from the homemade dog food recipes you prepare yourself.

The Best Grooming Tips-5 Important Areas

by Joy Randelin Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-13)

Grooming your dog regularly is important. Regular dog grooming keeps your pet healthy as well as looking good. Don't know where to start? Start here!

1. Brushing Your Dog

Your dog will love the attention they get while you brush them. Brushing your dog will give time for your relationship to grow AND keep your dog's coat healthy and shiny! If you have a long haired dog you should be brushing them daily, a medium haired dog weekly, and a short haired dog monthly. Following these guidelines will help keep matted hair and tangles from showing up on your pup!

Have a system in place to make sure you do your best job brushing your dog. Brush from one end to the other, you can start at either tail or head, pick a direction and you won't miss anything in the middle. Then brush from the top of the dog down.

What if your dog already has hair mattes? You'll need the right brushes to remove the matting. Slowly free the matte with a slicker brush. If you have a large stubborn matte you can remove it with a clipper, be careful not to hit your pup's skin!

2. Dog haircuts

Dog haircuts occur at different intervals depending on what breed of dog you have. A breed with fast growing hair may need a cut as often as every 2 to 4 weeks, dogs with shorter hair can go much longer. While you should probably hire someone trained in dog haircuts to do full haircuts on your animal, in between cuts you can do trims yourself. Dog haircuts can say a lot about a dog, you want them looking good!

3. Bathe Your Dog With Organic Dog Shampoo:

Like it or not giving your dog a bath is part of pet ownership! The frequency of these baths will vary depending on the breed of your dog. Recommendations vary from once every 3 months to once a month on how often to bathe your puppy. If your dog loves the mud you may be up for super frequent bathing!

Make wise choices about the products that you use on your dog. Organic dog shampoo is a great place to start.

4. Clip Their Nails:

You need to keep your dog's nails cut. This process will be much easier if your dog is used to having their paws handled. Play with your dog's feet and toes when you are spending time together, this will make them more relaxed when it is time to cut their nails.

You want to avoid the quick, which is the vein that runs through the nail. Cutting this will cause your pet pain and it will become exponentially more difficult to convince them to hold still while you trim their nails.

5. Brush Your Pooch's Teeth

Just like clipping nails your dog may need to get used to the idea of having their teeth cleaned. You can start by massaging their gums/teeth with your finger or having them taste a small amount of toothpaste designed for dogs.

Get a toothbrush made for dogs to use. You will apply toothpaste directly to your dog's teeth and brush! Brushing your dog's teeth is never a bad thing aim to do it every day, or every other day at least.

Now get started. If you don't have them already, get an assortment of hair brushes (depending on the length of your dog's hair), organic dog shampoo and other bath equipment, a sharp nail clipper designed for dogs, dog toothbrush and toothpaste, and the name of a groomer who gives great dog haircuts! Keep everything together to get organized.

With Christmas approaching have you thought about a hamster cage as a gift?

by John Walkerin Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-13)

If you can't think of a gift to buy a family member or loved one maybe you're not thinking outside the box, so here's an idea why not buy them a hamster cage? If you know someone who has a hamster for a pet then there is nothing they would love more than for you to keep their favourite little friend in mind during the Christmas season.

Instead of trying the find the coolest new gadget on the market or adding more clothes to the growing pile your family members and friends already have, you can opt for something different. I guarantee they will never see it coming so put an air of mystery back into Christmas and let's get shopping. There are certain things you will need to know before you get started so here are a few questions to ask yourself.

What type of hamster cage should I buy?

Before you decide on a type of cage you have to know what kind of hamster your friend or family member has, this will make things a lot easier. Dwarf hamsters are very small so if this is what you're working with you might want to eliminate wire cages with wide spaces between the bars. You don't want your Christmas gift to be the reason your loved one's hamster escaped. If you've never bought a hamster cage before trying to choose one can be overwhelming because there are many options on the market, but knowing the breed of hamster will make the process a lot easier.

How much am I willing to spend?

Of course you will also need to figure out how much money you're willing to spend on this gift. Cost will vary according to the type of cage you buy, the size of the cage, the place of purchase and several other factors. The best thing to do is have a set budget in mind and make sure you plan to spend a realistic amount, although you don't want o break the bank on this Christmas gift you still want to buy something that is durable and that will last for many Christmases' to come. Anywhere between 35- 50 dollars is a reasonable price to spend on a hamster cage.

Where can I buy a hamster cage?

After you've figured out the type of cage you need and how much you're willing to spend, the next step is to find a suitable place to buy the hamster cage. A pet store is the ideal place to find cages and best of all you will have attendants in the store who can answer any questions or concerns you might have. Of course there are also online stores that sell a variety of cages especially if you want something a bit more unique than just the average cage. Your best bet is to try both options, visit a pet store and see what they have, but also go online and do your research. Chances are you will find the perfect hamster cage and your thoughtful gift will be the highlight of Christmas.

A Little Info on Pet Gates

by Allaric Saltzmanin Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-10)

Pets are a part of the family but it is understandable that they should be kept away from certain areas during certain
times. If you are training him then it is most important to have pet gates installed for your dog. Especially when you are expecting
some guests, the dog may run about and fall asleep on the sofa.

You will not want a dog paw print or dog hair sticking on your couch or the carpet. You will also not have to worry about
the pet dog smell, it has left behind. This is the time you will find a pet gate as a best solution.

Even if there is a small baby in the house then you don't want your dog to wander around because the dog hair may
cause allergy or an irritation to the child. Dog may try to lick the baby because the saliva of the dog is unhygienic.

We cannot let the dog inside our kitchen when we prepare the food or the dining area for sanitation purposes. Cleaning
up the hairs falling from them is extra work and will tire us.

Whenever you are having meals he may sit in front of the table begging for food even if he has had his dog food, he
gets tempted to the food on the dining table and want you to throw a piece from your plate. This will be a awful sight and
overeating may be unhealthy for the dog, he is not aware of it so a dog gate right outside the dining room is advisable. The dog
will understand this limitation after some days.

If there are two dogs in your house a male and a female then you would want them to stay away from each other, if one
of them is in heat, then it is helpful to avoid sexual contact. So you will not have to face the reproduction and bringing up of
puppies. The pet gates can put your dogs in different rooms.

There are elderly and old people in your house, who cannot move without support. If a dog is running freely about it
may cause difficulty and interfere when the old people are walking and could make them loose balance and fall down. Even some
old people have asthma problems, so they need their room dog hair free because hair may clog their respiratory pipe and cause a
threat. In such cases a dog gate is best solution to secure the room.

There are many types of pet gates available in the market, so make certain to buy one that is suitable according to your
pet's height and jumping movements. With these dog gates your babies are safe and house remains sanitized.

The Precautionary Steps you Need to Take When Purchasing Pet Meds Online

by Petoptseoin Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-10)

When your pet is ill and showing discomfort, you are worried and search for ways to give care and comfort to it. First thing you want to do would be giving some medicines that are stocked at home. Well, there is no harm in it if you know it is the right medicine for the pet. It is actually a necessity to keep emergency as well as regular pet medications at home because you never know when your pet falls ill. Though there is vet clinic nearby, it is not necessary for you to rush to veterinarian for all illness. Many diseases can be cured at home choosing appropriate medication.

There is an increasing trend in buying online medication when there is a prescription. For the most part it is appropriate. However, it is really very important for you to gauge the pros and cons of buying such medication from online stores. You might have already seen many ads on pet meds discount and other offers made by the store owners. It is important for you to sit a moment and think about the choices before jumping the gun. It does not mean that all those online pet supply stores are swindlers. You can certainly find out legitimate stores that supplies quality drugs at a discount price.

Get a prescription before you decide on purchasing online pet meds. This is very important. Whether it is a serious illness or a smaller illness that can be cured with over-the-counter, it is apt for you to have a prescription and at the same time you should choose an online store which insists on prescription from a doctor before delivering the medicines to you.

Check out the accreditation of the website. It is really very crucial for you to buy from accredited pharmacy. Such pharmacy can ensure you quality and reliability. When a pharmacy is accredited they have to show that they meet all the licensing requirement of a pharmacy such as assuring quality of the drugs as well as giving medicine only on valid prescriptions.

However, it is appropriate for you to buy regular medicines such as frontline plus for eradicating fleas from the pet's body from any online store. You need to check the trademark and other details of the product and make sure that this is the same product you were looking for. A prescription is not actually needed for such over-the-counter medications and for buying such medications from online stores does not actually have any underlying dangers. Moreover, you can buy it easily from home so choosing this option is appropriate.

Check other factors relating to the website when you make a purchase. You can see the features they are offering you. A good website would list out each and every medication in their store and will carry many positive as well as negative reviews on the medications including benefits and potential risks. Watch for a while to understand the authenticity of the website. Utilizing Your Dog To Switch Their Behavior

   by Harry88in Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-10)

Are you thinking of getting a dog and don't know where to begin training it? Have a dog and want to quell some undesirable behaviors? Well, then this article is for you! Read on to find simple, easy tips for training a dog to truly be man's best friend.

To make training your dog effective, refrain from attempting to train it when you're mad at it. If you are upset, there is no way you can give fair orders to your dog, because you will let your emotions take over any rational thoughts. Therefore, you should wait until you have calmed down before attempting to train your dog.

Create a bridge between the dog's response to a command and the reward for success. By saying a bridge word such as "yes" or "good", you will reinforce that the behavior is acceptable and the reward will follow. Keep using this bridge word even after training is complete to be consistent with your pet.

Before you begin training your dog, make sure that his diet is the best it can be. Just as humans can feel lazy after eating junk food, a poor diet for your dog will affect his behavior. A healthy, moderate diet will give him energy and concentration to learn what you are teaching him in training.

The best way to crate train an adult dog is to allow the dog to train himself. Put the crate in a quiet room with a comfortable blanket and a favorite toy inside and leave the dog alone in the room with the crate. This way, the dog learns that the crate isn't something to be afraid of.

Chewing is something that all puppies do when teething, and you need to let them know exactly what they can and can't chew. Provide your puppy with his own chew toys to alleviate the pain of teething, and try to keep other items out of reach. If you catch your puppy chewing on something unacceptable, firmly say 'no', and take the item away from him. Immediately replace it with one of his designated chew toys. If your puppy is in a lot of pain due to teething, a frozen wet washcloth is ideal for him to chew on.

Spend plenty of time with your dog to make obedience training easier. When your dog associates your voice and presence with his or her normal environment, training becomes easier because your pet is more inclined to pay attention to you. Spending time playing or in other unstructured activities makes time spent in training exercises more effective.

Dogs can get bored during training. Doing the same thing over and over for endless time periods, will assure your dog will not be a good student. Try to vary your routine and put time limits on the amount of time you practice different behaviors. When your dog feels like an experience is new, he will respond quicker.

All dogs can be trained to do what you want them to do, if you are willing to put the work and effort into training them. Starting from puppyhood is the best way to go when you are dealing with dog training of any type. If this is not possible, remember to be a bit more forgiving and patient. Not every dog is the same.

Question Yourself Before Giving the Wrong Food to Your Dog

by Simon Beaulieuin Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-10)

There are many pet owners who are under the impression that they can feed their dogs anything they want. The dog could be subsisted on leftovers or scraps. These are pet owners who love their dogs but do not have sufficient knowledge about the necessary nutrition required by your dog to ensure they will live a healthy life. Many of these dogs end up with variety of diseases because they are not eating a balanced diet. There are many types of foods for dogs on the market.

People get heart disease, diabetes & obesity because of unhealthy eating habits, the same happens to dogs. Like people, dogs must have a healthy, balanced diet to maintain good health and protect against disease. A healthy dog food consists of balanced nutrition through high quality ingredients, based on the latest science. It is important to remember that dogs are omnivores, which means they require both meat and vegetables to ensure they are getting their essential nutrients. Fortunately, now-a-days one can simply buy a complete balanced diet for dogs. There are many kinds of dog foods available that provide complete and balanced nutrition to promote your dog's overall health and wellbeing. To make a decision, it is necessary to do research on what your dog needs in terms of nutrition and read the ingredients on the packaging before you purchase.

Physical and behavioural problems can occur when your pet is not properly nourished. If your pet is becoming aggressive or lethargic, this may be a sign of poor nutrition. There are many long term issues that can present themselves when pets are not properly fed, such as joint pain, digestion issues and disease.

Some of the benefits of feeding a healthy and complete food to your dog are a shiny coat, greater mobility, increased immune system and superior digestion. Remember, a constant supply of fresh water is an essential part of your dog's daily diet. When looking for the best dog food, it is recommended to visit a pet specialty store as they have a greater selection and the staff is trained in helping you pick the right food for your pet.

The first challenge in choosing a dog food is picking one that has high quality ingredients and provides complete and balanced nutrition. A term that comes up lot about dog food is complete and balanced diets. This implies that the food provides your dog with all the necessary nutrients it needs without requiring the use of supplements. Major pet food companies try to provide balanced proportions of vitamins, minerals & nutrients for maximum benefit to the pet. Although you may see many brands of dog food available in market, a reputable dog food company will provide explanations for each ingredient or nutrient & its benefits. Next time you are looking for a dog food, make sure it is complete and balanced.

Some cat owners may find it difficult when selecting their cat's food. Cost is important, but the health benefits of the food are also very important. We enjoy spoiling our cats & cats love to be pampered, so sometimes we supplement our cat's food with cat treats. Spoiling cats with treats may not be a good decision. It may train them to want more treats and less nutritious food, which will affect the cat's overall health. To get the best selection of high quality cat foods, visit your local pet specialty shop. Much of the decision is probably based on advertising we hear, but you need to research the ingredients and formulations to ensure you are selecting the best diet for your cat. It is often that we select a food because it says it's 'natural' or some other persuasive word on the label, but make sure it will be the proper food for your pet. Doing a little research on what type of food your pet needs will go a long way to providing them with a healthy and happy life.

Here you can get perfect hutches for your pet

by Brokespaulin Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-08)

We are all familiar with the home designed especially for rabbits that is rabbit hutches. It is the protective place for rabbits to save them from predators, and give them space to play, eat, exercise and move freely. Basically it is made up of wood. Its size must be enough so that it can accommodate more than two rabbits otherwise you have to get another one when rabbits will multiply. Usually one pet require at least one square foot area to live comfortably.

The main aim of cages is to protect them from predators so it must be placed in such a place where predators can't reach. It should be warm and properly ventilated to let fresh air and sunlight come in. The temperature of hutch must be between 45 to 85 degree Fahrenheit. The base should be made in such a way from where waste can easily be removed because to keep it clean is essential for pet's good health and nature. It should not include any harmful things like wire because rabbit's small feet can be injured from it.

You should always choose good quality cages otherwise you will spend much of your time in repairing it. Inferior quality of cages can collapse anytime and can cause harm to your little friend. It should be strong enough to bear wind and rain and made up of non toxic material because rabbits like to chew it. It should have enough space for them to play.

If we talk about guinea pigs then it is the creature who likes to live in groups and one pig require at least 2 square feet of area. Solid bottom is recommended for pigs also. Clean it regularly and whenever you clean it keep them outside the hutch. And any other which you should consider while purchasing guinea pig hutches is as same as rabbit hutches.

The reason why simply hutches is the best and most trusted company for rabbit hutches is that besides giving high quality products they offer other facilities like experts advice, reasonable prices, free delivery on all products. They make your shopping easier and quicker. They provide money back offer also if customer is not satisfied with products. Staff here is very friendly and cooperative. You can match their price with anyone else in the market. They ensure privacy throughout your shopping process.

Everyone lives happy in comfortable home even pets so their cage must be according to the number and size of rabbits and guinea pigs. It should be big enough for them to play and move here there easily and even accommodate more rabbits when they multiply.

How To Choose A Dog Toy For Your Dog

by Jean Cotein Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-08)

As a dog owner it is sometimes difficult to pick the right dog toy for your dog. When you go to the local pet shop there are always at least 30 different types of toys that you can buy your dog. The question is, which one is most suitable for your dog? In this article, I will talk about the most common dog toys and what their uses are.

A dog toy that is very popular is the Kong. It is made of a durable rubber that is safe for dogs to chew and allows you to put treats inside so that the dog spends time taking it out. I find this toy extremely useful as I can put peanut butter or dog treats inside of it and give it to my dog right before I leave to work in the morning. This gives my dog about an hour or so of active time with the toy. If you're going to get a Kong, you should know that there are several types of Kongs. There is the blue puppy Kong which is a softer rubber, there is also the red original Kong which is the most common, and then there is the black durable Kong for heavy chewers. I recommend that you buy the red one and if your dog is chewing it heavily then you can buy the black one.

Another great toy that you will find in your local pet shop is a tug toy. These tug toys are extremely fun to play with and helps to create bonding time with your dog. The tug toys that you find that most pet shops are sometimes not of the highest quality. Make sure that you grab the toy in your hands and that you pull tightly on both ends to make sure that it doesn't rip or fall apart. I recommend that you buy a tug toy that is made of a rope material as opposed to a fabric material since it is much more durable. The size of the tug toy should match the size of your dog, if you have a small dog obviously don't by a large one.

One of the best thing that you can buy is a tennis ball launcher. It allows you to throw a tennis ball extremely far without much effort on your part. If your dog is a natural retriever then it will give him lots of running time. The reason that I like this toy so much is that instead of going for a walk I can just go to the Park and throw the ball a dozen of times and my dog gets exhausted very quickly. There are several models available and the one that I like the most is a compact version that folds and easily fits in the car.

Perhaps the most exciting dog toy that you can buy your dog is a squeaky toy. This dog toy has a small rubber squeaky inserted in the middle of the dog toy so that when the dog bites it, the dog toy makes a special noise. I recommend that you store away this dog toy when you are not at home to prevent your dog from ripping it apart.

Do You Know What You Need to Know About Your New Pet Glider?

by Kelly Pattersonin Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-06)

More and more people purchase new pets every year. Even as the economy flags, people find that a loyal, friendly pet can be a worth while investment for the morale boost alone. And for this, gliders have become even more popular. Sugar gliders are adorable little marsupials known for their loyalty and chilled-out nature. Not only will they calmly curl up in your shirt pocket, they'll prefer that to running around if you're out and about.

But they're exotic pets. This is something of a buzz word, but it doesn't usually mean much but that they're from another country and aren't legal in every state. They're native to Australia. There is one complication that arises as a result, however--locating them.

Why they have to be found:

Gliders are not frequently sold in pet stores, nor are glider--specific items. They're fairly low maintenance, and toys and accessories appropriate for other creatures are frequently more than suitable, and specific items can be found online. Many people are at a loss, however, as to where they can be found and why they aren't simply out in the open like most pets are. Even snakes and spiders--which many would much more easily label 'exotic' can be found more easily! This leaves many at a loss about where to buy sugar gliders.

The reason for this is that gliders are social creatures. They form colonies in the wild and in domesticity, and they go through a period of bonding after about eight weeks of growing up. During this period they build family relations. This is why they're such loyal pets, and why they can even get along with other animals.

It also means they can't be kept in stock for very long.

Because of this, most sugar gliders must be purchased from breeders.

So where do I find breeders?

Breeders are best located through the USDA. USDA sugar glider breeders must follow particular regulations and keep their gliders up to a particular code of health. The USDA regulates important legal matters pertaining to pets. Many breeders fly under the radar, and are not under these regulatory measures, operating uncertified.

This does not make them inherently bad, but it does make them less safe to strangers. This makes the USDA your best source for where to buy sugar gliders, as even though they do not sell them directly, they will help you get in touch with the most reliable people that do.

Pet Obesity: The Problem and Solution for Your Dog

by Maria Elenain Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-06)

Fat dog! Seeing an overweight pup rolling around the floor might seem like something out of a comic strip, but it's not funny in the long run and happens more often than you might think. Pet obesity is becoming more of a problem as owners often disregard the thought of their pup's overeating habits. Like humans, pups too can store that extra weight, and like humans it can lead to heart and health problems. As the owner and guardian of your pets, you need to ensure their health and happiness.

How do I know if my pup is overweight?

So how do you determine if your canine companion has put on one too many pounds? There are charts available online that reference breed with size to estimate healthy weight levels. All you need is the Internet and a scale. Fortunately, a trip to the vet will usually reveal such problems as the doggy doc knows your pup's history and most everything about them.

With some pups that suffer from extreme weight problems, wheezing and difficulty moving around are common, especially as fluids build up around their heart and lungs. High cholesterol levels and lack of exercise can cause fluid retention and can lead to heart problems in dogs.

Balanced meal

What your pup eats affects their health and how they feel. Check your pup's food for cholesterol and calorie intake. Pups with an active lifestyle will need more calories for energy, but if your dog is more laid back, often senior pups, you need to find a dog food with reduced calories.

There is also the option of cutting your pup's food with a "lite" dog food. Changing your pup's dog food can sometimes be tricky, so you should consider mixing both old and new foods until they feel comfortable eating the new diet.

There is also the matter of unhealthy diets- such as large amounts of human food. Bacon, steak, and even potato chips are quite delicious for humans, but are high sources of cholesterol and calories. It is best to try to avoid treating your pup with these items.

Plenty of exercise

So ask yourself, how often do you walk your pup? How about actively play with them in the yard? Exercise is as important for them as it is for us. Daily walks aren't just for potty time, it is for bonding and exercise too.

Something to remember is that if your pup is already suffering from excessive weight problems, you'll need to start them off slowly at first and work them back to a healthy lifestyle. If you take your pup for a five mile run right after discovering they're out of shape, they'll keep up with you because that's what dogs do. But it isn't good for their body and heart, especially to reintroduce them to high levels of fitness suddenly.

Playtime as a treat

That little bag of incentives you keep high on the counter so that your pup doesn't get into it, isn't always the answer to a good deed. Though there are healthy treats you can pick up, and even some offer protection for their teeth, you can also use to playtime as a treat. When they've been good, interact with them and show them some love. They'll get exercise, attention, and a treat. About the Author

Working With Your Puppy: Tips And Ideas To Build A Well-Behaved Pet

   by Harry88in Family / Pets    (submitted 2011-11-06)

You have a dog that you wish to enter into the service industry by taking care of special needs individuals. This requires not only a special dog, but also careful training to ensure that the dog will be a good fit for anyone. This article will provide specific examples of how to train your dog for this purpose.

Do not push your dog to eat things he does not love, thinking it will train him to enjoy the food over time. The treat or dog food bag may say that all dogs love the food the bag contains, but the truth is that dogs are very selective about their food. Experimenting to find food and treats that your dog loves goes a long way toward your dog's overall happiness.

The best way to teach your dog not to beg at the table is to never feed him people food. Don't allow guests or family members to feed your dog from the table. It may look cute, but it will only encourage the dog to continue begging for scraps. Your dog will be healthier and happier if he never learns he can get food from the dinner table.

If you are obedience training with your dog, consider training him to pass the Canine Good Citizen test. Even if your dog never takes the test itself, the requirements of the test are an excellent standard of desirable dog behavior. If he excels at the categories of study, you'll know you're in great shape.

Before your dog can learn a new command it will take several repetitions. It is not uncommon for it to take between 25 to 50 repetitions of the same command for your dog to learn it. Continue trying the same command and be patient, your dog will get it.

Set goals for training your dog. Decide what time of day you will work with your dog and how long you will work. Decide exactly what you want to work on, and be consistent. Work on the same things, in the same way, at the same time every day until mastered. Once you have accomplished one goal, build on it by adding something new. Don't skip around or be inconsistent. This is confusing for your dog.

If you are getting a new dog, and you intend to train it, look for a younger dog. The old adage "You can't teach an old dog new tricks" is somewhat appropriate here. Younger dogs are more receptive to dominance from a pack leader and will learn quickly in an effort to please. Another plus to this is that young dogs really enjoy learning new things, much like children do.

When training your dog, remember to be patient. This will prevent both you and your dog from getting angry and frustrated with the training process. Remember that your dog really does want to please you, but sometimes he gets confused because he speaks a different language and cannot understand what you are asking.

Know that all barking isn't bad barking. Some barking is necessary for a watchdog to alert you or a dog to let its mother know it's hungry. However, if your dog barks incessantly at everything and everyone it may need training. First figure out the reason behind your dog's barking, and then speak with your veterinarian to determine the best course of action.

A great dog training tip is to get everyone on the same page. If you're trying to correct certain behavior, you don't want a family member enabling that bad behavior. By having everyone on the same page, your dog will be much more likely to respond to training.

When you get a new puppy, make sure you handle him every day. This means touching him from ears to tail so he becomes used to being handled by people. This will save you headaches at vet appointments, grooming parlors, or even nail trims at home in the future, since your dog will not mind being touched as much.

As was stated in this article, it is possible to have that wonderful dog that you can be proud of. You just have to have the right techniques in order to do that. So do not waste any more time and put these great tips to use. You will not recognize your dog when you are done.
